I knew I was called to be a preacher at the age of six. While other children pictured various futures, my heart was made up, and it never changed. I pursued that calling through high school, seminary, and my initial pastorate, convinced that I knew what way God had ordained for me. But what I never expected was that this call would lead me behind prison walls, not as an inmate, but as a chaplain. Over 28 years, 22 of which were spent with the Bureau of Prisons and 6 in private prisons, I ministered in some of America’s most challenging settings, preaching every week and counseling each day, and witnessing firsthand the struggles, regrets, and remarkable transformations of men behind bars. I taught myself the language of grace in an environment governed by routine and repercussion. I listened rather than talked, cried with those who felt alone, and spoke the parables of Jesus with a sudden sense of urgency, of life. In a very real way, prison was my real seminary. Let Me Explain is the essence of that journey, a series of stories, sermons, and reflections that weave together Scripture and lived experience. It’s not a book, it’s the faith I carried, the ministry I lived, and the God I saw at work in places most people want to forget.
